Obsessions: Garren

GARREN You can have it all. That is, if you're Garren, who began his reign as a beauty industry icon in the late 1970s when he took away Farrah Fawcett's signature wing curls for a Vogue spread. "When my dream of being in Vogue first came true, I realized I would have to work harder than ever to avoid becoming stale and stagnant," Garren says. Yet more than 30 years into his career, this salon owner, product line creator and agency manager, with 1,000-plus magazine covers to his credit, says he still gets nervous. "It's important for me to be a little frightened at every shoot," he explains. "After all, I'm creating something not just for a model or designer, but for thousands of people to see."

Garren began with a much smaller audience: his neighborhood in upstate New York. Infatuated with hair from age 13, he began his self-training by experimenting with teasing techniques to modernize the retro styles his mom and her girlfriends would get from salons. Now with a loyal roster of celebrities including Linda Evangelista, Gisele and Cindy Crawford, as well as the everyday clients at his 5th Avenue salon at Henri Bendel, his clout is as strong internationally as it is locally.
