Our Town

Laru Ni Hati

Laru Ni Hati, which means "clear blue sky" in Garifuna, a language spoken mostly in Central America, opened its doors in 1990. The 4,000-square-foot, bilevel salon features an interior inspired by the Paramount Hotel in Manhattan, with a long, winding, ascending ramp that leads to Philippe Starck sinks and mirrors and a color bar on a tongue-and-groove wooden platform. From cut and color to makeup application and waxing, clients can enjoy a range of services at Laru Ni Hati. The salon also has an underground lounge studio that features an all-white decor with a glass ceiling that looks up to the main level, a pool table and large French doors that lead to a patio and alley. Clients can enjoy delicious homemade Cuban food, as well as French wine and Champagne, in the salon's Café Cubano.

Waves Salon

Waves Salon owner Mario Ortiz attributes the success of his salon to its upscale yet friendly environment. "In addition to treating clients well, the staff treats each other well, too," Ortiz says. "We work well together, and our teamwork makes clients feel like they're part of a close-knit family." The 1,200-square-foot salon, which has been in business for more than 20 years, moved to its current location four years ago. The modern decor is full of environmentally friendly touches like cork floors, and features art from local artists. With a full menu of hair services, including hair extensions and Kérastase express and Brazilian keratin treatments, the most popular choices are color and highlights. Says Ortiz, "We do our best to keep up with the latest techniques and technical information from our color line, Goldwell."

Heart + Soul Hair Salon

"We do great hair and have a very high level of expectation from our employees," says Heart + Soul Hair Salon owner Melissa Ackerman. The 1,300-square-foot salon, which opened in 1996, only offers hair services. Color and cuts are the most popular services requested by the salon's clients, who range from upscale women to hip college students. The salon's modern decor features a black-and-white motif with crystal accents throughout and custom-made styling stations and mirrors. When deciding what to call her salon, Ackerman wanted to use a name that had nothing to do with hair. After visiting a jazz club in San Francisco called Heart and Soul, she was inspired to call her salon by the same name.
