Sultry, retro waves get a modern update by Salon Karma’s Danielle Keasling.

Taking on the luxurious look of old-world waves mixed with a modern twist, stylist Danielle Keasling, owner of Salon Karma in Hilton Head Island, SC, presents the Curvaceous collection. Drawing from the looks of 1940s starlet Veronica Lake, particularly her signature peek-a-boo pinup style, Keasling created contemporary versions with more volume and cleaner lines. “I love to see perfectly polished waves,” Keasling says. “It’s one of my favorite looks in hair right now, and they can be very wearable for women today when paired with a very non-retro outfit.”
ABOVE: For these waves, Danielle Keasling divided locks into horizontal subsections starting from the bottom and curled each with a 1-inch iron using a twist and wrap technique. Curls were brushed out and waves were molded by spraying them with Matrix Design Pulse Hard Lock Extra Strong Hold Hairspray, using the can to hold the hair in place while it dried.
ABOVE: With a 1½-inch iron, Keasling set the hair using a twist and wrap technique and Design Pulse Iron In Thermal Styling Mist. After locks cooled, she set the beehive with a Millinery Mesh sponge-like stuffing for height. To create a smooth finish, Keasling spritzed a Sam Villa styling brush with Total Results Moisture Cure 2-Phase Treatment and smoothed the wave into shape.
ABOVE: Looking to achieve extra volume, Keasling began with a full blowout to create a good base for styling and used Design Pulse Go Big Extra Strong Hold Mousse for added oomph. She then curled locks with a 1-inch iron following a horizontal sectioning all the way up the head. Once the curls were cool, she took a Mason Pearson brush to loosen and smooth the curls. She then set the final look with Design Pulse Mega Dust for added lift.
