Save the Date: Photography Masterclass with Damien Carney

In more ways than one, social media has reinvented the salon business. A good photo on any given social platform can boost your following, and in turn, boost revenue. With a digital portfolio in the palm of your hands, it only makes sense to sharpen up your photography skills with a master class taught by industry greats.

Hosted by hair stylist and photographer Damien Carney (@damiencarneypro), makeup artist Joanne Gair (@joannegair) and wardrobe stylist Nikko Kefalas (@nikkokefalas), the two-day program offers a look-and-learn approach for hairdressers, makeup artists and wardrobe stylists looking to grow and develop their photographic skills at all levels. We talked with Carney to learn a little more about the class, what attendees will take away, and why he thinks there's always room to grow.

Q Who would this class benefit?

A Anyone wishing to experience the world of hair through a photographic lens. It will help and guide those wanting to create unique and personalized hair collections that stand out from the crowd. The images can be used for self branding, entering photo competitions and submitting images to both fashion and trade magazines. The program is designed for all levels—beginner to advanced—and we want to help, support and guide attendees through the art of taking a good photo.

Q What can attendees expect to learn?

A Attendees will take a great deal of information away from the class, including organizing the structure and creative process of an editorial shoot, controlling creative "chaos" and developing a concept from scratch. We will also cover how to develop a team in your area and where to connect with like-minded photographers, make up artists and stylists. If that's not enough, we will cover model contracts, usage rights, retouching, controlling your budgets and lack thereof. We really cover it all.

Q What would you say to someone who feels like they have too much experience to take a class?

A I would say that having the ability to witness team work at this level is rare. When I say that, I mean both Gair and Kefalas have been creative directors for major fashion houses and editorial magazines. They bring a wealth of knowledge to the table and are very open about mentoring and sharing everything they know. No matter how much experience we have, every shoot has different energy, dynamics, concepts. In short we want our attendees to be armed for any situation because it's rare that any given shoot will be similar to another. No one can have "too much" experience—it's all about the right team, chemistry, dynamics and always creating memorable images.
