Tim Hartley Pays Tribute to Vidal Sassoon With the Rare Beauty Collection

Our February issue features Tim Hartley's Rare Beauty collection, showcasing precision cutting and classic hairdressing techniques inspired by Vidal Sassoon. Check out the rest of the collection here, along with the basic steps Tim used to get the looks:

To create this sexy silhouette, which is Tim Hartley’s signature look, he cut the hair in a heavy line from the jaw to just in front of the mastoid, then pivoted the graduation from the side into the center using horizontal sectioning. He then blow-dried the hair and cut the fringe freehand.

Hartley achieved this wavy, voluminous look by first cutting the hair in a one-length line with a long, low asymmetric fringe. He then prepped damp hair with beach-texture spray and blow-dried it upside down for maximum volume. Finally, he tonged the hair from roots to ends and backcombed the roots for an airy effect.

Taking inspiration from the “firefly” technique of the 1970s, Hartley created this short look by cutting a graduated line from front to back to rest just on top of the cheekbone at the side, pivoting into tight graduation through the back.

Hartley cut this model's naturally wavy mid-length hair using a simple graduated line taken from front to back using a three-tiered technique. The first section was kept tight from temple to nape with a heavy line running from the center back to the jaw. Mid-sections were cut up from the temple area with a slight overhang to the perimeter sections using a graduated line. The top sections were cut vertically using a vertical layering technique, to give the shape diffused disconnection. To style the look, Hartley sprayed damp hair with a beach-texture spray, then diffuser-dried it. He then pin-curled small sections of hair to the scalp and blow-dried the hair again upside down. Finally, he freed the curls and pushed the hair into it's final shape.
