Situated on Anacapa Street in the seaside enclave, the new state-of-the-art facility is part of the Paul Mitchell The School corporate school program, which supports a group of schools that have joined together to promote learning, networking, collaboration and development. The owners of Paul Mitchell The School Santa Barbara have prepared and trained for the alliance for more than a year. They will work and educate exclusively with John Paul Mitchell Systems products, and instructors and students will follow an aggressive ongoing educational and cultural development program to mirror that of Paul Mitchell The School in Costa Mesa, CA, among others.

Commenting on the latest addition, Claybaugh said, "Santa Barbara is such a beautiful place. The strength of the hairdressing community there is so strong that we always knew we would one day open one of our schools there. A night of pouring rain could not put a damper on our beautiful grand opening. The packed house that night, filled with salons, the mayor and the business community, all added up to the perfect launch for a Paul Mitchell School that I know will make a huge difference." —KELLEY DONAHUE

Beloved Michigan Consultant Retires

After 45 of years of working as a salon consultant, Glen Griffore plans to retire following his 65th birthday in April. The Michigan native started his career in the beauty industry straight out of high school in 1962, when he worked as a delivery boy for his family's business, Glamour Beauty. Since then, he has served a short stand in the National Guard and later moved on to work for Maly's beauty supply, his current employer, in Michigan. "I felt lucky to get in with Maly's because they are a progressive company," Griffore said. He has been working with them since 1985.

On average, Griffore visits a whopping 12 to 15 salons a day and drives about 1,100 miles a week, rain or shine. He tries to reach each and every one of his 150 salon clients biweekly. After so many years with the same clients, strong ties and friendships have developed. "I like being able to see a salon grow," Griffore said. "Some of my clients are like family to me."

After such a long and productive career, Griffore plans to enjoy the downside that will come with retirement. "It's time to turn over the wheel to a younger person," he said. "I'm looking forward to sitting in Arizona for a few months when it gets cold here." —N.G.

John Paul DeJoria Works to Save a Wildlife Preserve

John Paul DeJoria, John Paul Mitchell Systems cofounder and CEO, is quite the conservationist. In an effort to help excavate and protect the Mirador Archaeological and Wildlife Preserve in northern Guatemala, DeJoria held a private dinner at his Malibu home with key supporters. Dr. Richard D. Hansen, director of the Mirador Basin Project, President-elect of Guatemala Alvaro Colom, President of JPMS Luke Jacobellis and actor Mel Gibson were just a few of the important guests who attended the dinner to discuss the issues. According to the World Wildlife Fund, the Maya Biosphere has lost 70 percent of its forests in the last 10 years, but the establishment of the Mirador Archaeological and Wildlife Preserve will help save the last remaining forests of the biosphere. "John Paul will go down in history among the greatest conservationists in world history," Hansen said. —N.G.
