ColorProof Evolved Color Care Offers Enhanced Benefits Program
ColorProof Evolved Color Care recently launched an improved loyalty program featuring more rewards and a new name: The Beauty with Benefits Program, which rewards salons with the business-building tools they need to increase profitability. The expanded rewards menu includes ColorProof’s formulas for Style and Finish, new merchandising materials and new TruCurl products for stocking the salon’s back bar and providing samples for clients. To become part of the Beauty with Benefits Program, salons must use and retail the entire ColorProof line and have a ColorProof distributor relationship; purchase a minimum of $1,200 per quarter of ColorProof products; and complete the ColorProof Beauty with Benefits registration form and submit to the company and the appropriate ColorProof distributor. Dermalogica Honors International Day of the Girl
On October 11, Dermalogica showed its support for International Day of the Girl—which empowers girls globally through education—with its social impact arm, Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship (FITE). In honor of the day, Dermalogica hosted the West Coast screening of Girl Rising, a documentary about nine girls pursuing their dreams amid poverty. Dermalogica co-founder Jane Wurwand, a member of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), attended CGI’s annual meeting in New York City and signed The Girl Declaration, a document spearheaded by the United Nations Foundation and the Nike Foundation and presented to the United Nations, asking them to recognize and take action for the more than 250 million girls and women living in poverty across the globe. “I’m personally committed that all girls are heard, and given a hand to truly reach their own potential,” Wurwand said. —C.R.
American Crew Names 2013 U.S. All-Star Challenge Finalists
American Crew announced three finalists for the 2013 American Crew All-Star Challenge: Bradford Davison (Blind Barber), Hannah Schnobrich (Gent Cuts and Grooming) and last year’s winner Patrick Chai (Equinox Salon). The competition, a quest to determine the best men’s hairstylist in the world, closed November 3 in Denver during the Opening Night celebration that included cocktails and dancing. The finalists received complimentary airfare and two tickets to Opening Night, along with a full set of American Crew tools, a finalist plaque and press coverage. The two runners up received $2,000, while the winner was awarded $5,000 and their winning style featured in an American Crew advertisement. The winner also has the opportunity to participate in the American Crew Global All-Star Challenge, a competition to determine the best men’s hairstylist in the world.

PBA’s Hair Competition Returns with ISSE
The International Salon and Spa Expo (ISSE) Long Beach, produced by the Professional Beauty Association (PBA), is coming to the Long Beach Convention Center in California, January 25–27, 2014. The event will feature approximately 150 educational classes, live stage performances from industry icons, and hair, nails and barber competitions. For the first time, ISSE will host Major League Barber Hot Hands Barber Brawl competitions, and competitors can register for categories including Original Tag Team and Fastest Barber in the World. The ISSE Hairstyling Competitions, open to students and licensed professionals, will feature categories such as Long Hair Bridal and Fantasy-Inspired by Hollywood. Other event highlights include the Nailpro Nail Competitions, as well as the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA). Cosmetologists Chicago Announces Photo Competition
The Stars and Rising Stars Photo Competition, sponsored by Cosmetologists Chicago, is bringing back its hairdressing photo competition. Winners and their work will be introduced at the third annual BeautyBash on March 22, 2014, and they will receive prizes, media recognition and complimentary accommodations during the America’s Beauty Show (ABS) weekend, held March 22–24 at McCormick Place in downtown Chicago. The Stars categories are open to salon professionals licensed more than three years, and the Rising Star of ABS 2014 category is available only to students enrolled in an accredited cosmetology school. ISPA Honors Horst RechelbacherWith Visionary Leader Award
Horst Rechelbacher received the International Spa Association (ISPA) Visionary Leader Award at the 23rd annual ISPA Conference & Expo held in Las Vegas in October. Each year, ISPA presents the Visionary Award to individuals who have made significant contributions to the growth of the spa industry. Rechelbacher founded Aveda in 1978, and the plant-based cosmetic company helped draw attention to the dangers of using low-quality ingredients in beauty products. After selling Aveda to Estée Lauder in 1997, Rechelbacher began Intelligent Nutrients, a beauty and health company devoted to using nontoxic, USDA-certified organic ingredients. “Horst truly embodies the word ‘visionary,’” said ISPA President Lynne McNees. “As he continues to lead as a visionary, ISPA is honored to recognize the impact he has made on the spa industry and the even broader beauty industry.” This year’s conference theme was Grow: Limitless Possibilities and offered related educational offerings, and keynote speakers included Blake Mycoskie, founder of Toms shoes and NBC’s The Apprentice winner Bill Rancic. —S.Z.
PBA Web Series Focuses on Building Client Base
To help salon professionals develop a client base, the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) is offering a complimentary Web series, Recommend and Retain: Building Your Client Base. Held December 2 and 9, the series is designed to help students and up-and-coming stylists attract clients, provide consistent services and establish successful retail routines. The 60-minute webinars feature Tamra Fiedler Segert, salon owner and Eufora International global educator. The first session, Attracting Lifelong Clients, instructs stylists how to define themselves professionally, identify markets and attract more clients. The second session, Master Retail for Retention, focuses on teaching students and stylists how to connect with clients through consultation and instruction, as well as how to recommend products and strengthen team relationships. So.Cap. Original USA Declares Winner of Pinterest Contest
In October, So.Cap. Original USA held a Pinterest contest to showcase photography of makeovers, taken by their members, and hairstylist Travis Manning was declared winner. Contest participants created Pinterest boards that linked to Facebook and received reward points for the most votes. “This new contest was a fun way to engage our member salons and showcase their talents while spreading the word about So.Cap. Original USA Hair Extensions,” says company co-owner Stéphanie Veissier. Manning, who owns Hail the Hair King Salon in Bloomington, IL, received a full set of So.Cap.
