After working in the female-focused skincare industry for 15 years, Joshua Harrell decided to create a product line specifically for guys. "The male grooming segment has seen tremendous growth over the last few years," says Harrell, who launched Jock Soap in 2007. "I wanted to create products that not only covered the shaving basics, but also tackled all the other skin issues a man faces throughout his life."

Jock Soap's newest addition is its Pro line, which is anchored by the Brighter Day Professional Peel and includes the Peel Prep Solution and post-treatment Calming Mist, along with backbar-sized containers of Good Eye Age-Fighting Eye Treatment and Heavyweight Champion Extreme Hydration Compound. "After launching Jock Soap, I began to develop a professional treatment that would help spas and salons build their male business," Harrell says. He suggests making men's treatments part of your service menu—and your regular dialogue—but cautions that most men are looking for instant results. He says, "If it's painless and they leave looking sexy, they'll be back." jocksoapcompany.com

Hair's the Thing

Men's grooming pioneer John Allan recently launched the first disc in a series of instructional DVDs that will help salons cater to male clients. John Allan's The Foundation—Studio Session 01 focuses on core cutting techniques, styling and product application. "Half the population outside any salon's door is men, so building that clientele benefits both the stylist and the salon," John Allan says.

The DVD highlights two techniques based on 1930s and '40s classics: Cutting on the Square and Cutting on the Round, which John Allan says, "give stylists the freedom to create with a strong foundation." For more information, e-mail [email protected].
