ROCK STAR

Scissor and clipper cuts, as well as hot shaves, are the most sought-after services at Rock’s Barbershop; the barbershop features deer antlers and pallet boards on the walls; vintage toys, globes and other items add to the rustic vibe.

When Jenean Eberhardt decided to open Rock’s Barbershop in Durham, NC, she wanted to create a place for men to relax and receive a high-end experience in a comfortable and masculine environment. “Barbershops have become places where men go in and out in 15 minutes,” Eberhardt says. “Durham has a huge demand for quality haircuts and relaxing shaves.” The 2,200-square-foot space, which opened in December 2013, features a rustic, vintage vibe with pallet boards and deer antlers on the walls, Thomas Edison-style light fixtures, vintage Playboy magazine covers on the bathroom walls, and a variety of old-fashioned toys and gadgets throughout. In addition to hot lather straight-razor shaves, the barbershop also offers scissor cuts, clipper cuts and beard trims. Clients can also enjoy home-brewed beer during their visit. In fact, Eberhardt hopes to add a small micro-brewery bar to the space in 2015. “Men have been going to salons because they are looking for a better haircut and experience, and that’s what we’re giving them, but in a barbershop environment,” says Eberhardt. —N.A.

GROOMED FOR SUCCESS

Every man can benefit from a little hair TLC. With that attitude in mind, Alexandro Josue, barber at The Barbershop Club in Los Angeles, offers his best tips and products to share with clients to keep them looking fresh from head to beard.

1. To combat stray beard and moustache hairs, use just enough product to coat one finger, such as Brooklyn Grooming Classic Beard Balm, and apply to unruly hairs.

2. Use beard oil before shaving facial hair for a comfortable and quick process. A product like Commando Classic Beard Oil can also be used as a pre-shave treatment for the high cheeks and below the Adam’s apple.

3. For a product-free look, rub a small amount of dense pomade paste, like Vegan Red Hook Old School Pomade, between the palms and fingers, and distribute by grazing the top of the hair. brooklyngrooming.com —C.R.
