How-To: Pigtail Braids & Slicked Side Parts

Creatures of the Wind Fall/Winter 2016, hair by Anthony Turner for Bumble and bumble.

Designer Direction/Hair Inspration: Knife; Fall 2016 is based on the concept of soft modernism, with references to notable graphic and object designers. Inspiration for the hair was a tough, slightly androgynous girl with two looks: tight, pigtail braids and a slicked, hard side part.

“Every other season here, we’ve always been a little romantic,” said lead stylist Anthony Turner for Bumble and bumble. “This season, I’m swapping that completely and doing something that’s a bit tougher. It feels really nice to do that. The inspiration was Snoop Dogg – they showed me pictures of Snoop Dogg and I loved his hair.”

Look 1 – Pigtail Braids

Styling Methods: Create a strong center part and prep hair with Dryspun Finish and Thickening Full Form Mousse for tension (no flyaways). Apply Brilliantine on the fingertips for added grip and create a raised cornrow on both sides, starting at the hairline and braiding back behind the ear, securing at the nape with elastic, and finish the braid through the ends (allowing the braid to sit on the shoulders). Apply Thickening Hairspray as needed to keep the braids clean. Finish with Classic Hairspray to calm flyaways.

Look 2 – Slicked Side Part

Styling Methods: Prep hair with Thickening Full Form Mousse and apply Thickening Hairspray at the crown. Create a deep-side part at the corner of the brow and blow dry the hair flat, directing roots back and along the hairline. Create a tight ponytail and secure at the nape of the neck with elastic. Cover the ponytail with a hairnet and shape into a bun and secure with hairpins. Finish with Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil for added shine and polish and Classic Hairspray.
