How-To: Style A Layered Bob

WHO: Cate Blanchett, Best Actress Nominee for Carol

HAIR BY: Celebrity Hairstylist, Robert Vetica for Olivia Garden

INSPIRATION: “The look is fresh and carefree, but also has an element of elegance and pays homage to the modern women of the Diana Vreeland era in the 1940s and 1950s, where femininity and elegance lived in full splendor. I also was inspired by iconic photographer Lillian Bassman, whose photographs exude innovation and elegance with cutting edge fashion. It was very refreshing and stood out during the time of the 40's and 50's when that wasn't necessarily common or expected. She was different and original, just like Cate and what we try to communicate with her on the red carpet.”

“I cut Cate’s hair into a fresh, new short layered bob. I know what you’re thinking, did you discuss this beforehand or was it last minute. Absolutely, like everything else in our world, it’s a conversation and it just seemed like the perfect time – why not day of the Oscars! Actually, it's one of the reasons I love this woman so much, I mean who cuts their hair day of. She's bold!”– Robert Vetica for Olivia Garden

TIPS/TECHNIQUE:  To give Cate her fresh, new cut I used Olivia Garden Cara Shears to create her jaw-length layered bob. We took her hair up from the collarbone and then added soft layers throughout. Once the cut was done the styling came next, which also mimicked the carefree nature of the look.

I applied a setting hairspray to wet hair to add strength and hold to my blow dry. It gives the hair a strong foundation for styling. Before my blow dry, I brushed from root to tip with Olivia Garden Divine Wet Detangler to distribute the product evenly through the hair and brush out any tangles. I then used Olivia Garden ECOCeramic Thermal Firm Round Brush to create a sleek blow dry with an emphasis on a low side part. It’s critical to have the proper brushes not only for styling, but cutting as well. If you don't have the right tools, the end result will suffer.

After the hair was dry, I took 2 by 2 inch sections starting at the top of the head and sprayed each with a shine protectant to smooth flyaways and create red carpet-worthy shine. I curled the sections with a 1 inch curling iron, just to give the hair bend, then quickly, with the same size Olivia Garden Jet Set Curlers, wrapped hair to set. When using rollers I always keep hair consistent with my part and wrap away from the face.

When her makeup was finished, I removed the rollers, sprayed the whole head with hairspray, and gave it a good brushing with Olivia Garden FingerBrush Vented Hair Brush using some quick heat from my blow dryer to loosen the set. This set insured that the finished result would last the whole night.
