Must Try: The Heart-Shaped Fishtail Bun

Michael Dueñas, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Hair Room Service, is known for his fresh and inventive styles, as well as his work with celebs like Shailene Woodley, Cara Delevingne, Lea Michele, Mariah Carey, Taryn Manning and more.

His latest creation, the heart-shaped fishtail bun, was inspired by the popular style he created recently for Erin Richards. Using a simple elastic and Nishida hairpins, here’s Dueñas’ step-by-step for getting the look.

Step 1: Start with smooth dry hair.

Step 2: Secure the hair into a low tight ponytail.  Texture can be pulled into the top and sides later.

Step 3: Create a fishtail braid (refer to fishtail braid tutorial in the video). and secure the end of the braid with a small elastic.

Step 4: Spray the braid with R+Co Outer Space Flexible Hold hairspray to smooth flyaway and add longevity to the style.

Step 5: Fold the base of the braid up against the head, securing with a 3-inch hairpin just above the elastic of your ponytail.

Step 6: Spread the top part of the braid out for width and to emphasize the heart shape, making sure to keep the end of the braid small.

Step 7: Fold the braid flat against the head, tucking the ends under themselves to hide them.

Step 8: Pin to the head so it is flat as possible, and shape as desired.

Dueñas’ Pro Tip: Keep very clean sections on the braiding, and pull the braid evenly to keep the heart balanced.
