Rafe Hardy Reinterprets Classic, High-Volume Looks

Sexy Hair Creative Director Rafe Hardy reinterprets classic, high-volume looks from two icons who are gone but not forgotten.

The classic quiff, with volume at the top and slicked-back sides, is a James Dean signature style that has endured for more than 60 years. Updating it for today’s client requires an eye for what’s edgy now and a facility with clippers. To help, Sexy Hair has announced a renewed commitment to education in men’s cutting and styling, with new classes and expanded offerings. “We’re going to be training stylists in men’s grooming and clipper cutting,” says Vice President of Marketing and Education Jennifer Weiderman. The new programs go hand in hand with new product introductions for the men’s market, all inspired by the company’s newest brand ambassador, James Dean. The classes, developed by Sexy Hair Director of Education Stephanie Polansky and International Master Artist Kelly Bileddo, will address both the technical aspects of clipper cutting and the business aspects of growing a male clientele. “Stylists will gain a better understanding of their clipper and learn three clipper haircuts inspired by James Dean: Free Form, Clipper Over Comb, and Free Hand,” said Weiderman. Classes will be offered in stores, at national shows and via The Sexy Hair Experience starting this month.

This classic, casual modern-day Marilyn look begins with a shoulder-length, layered cut. Add volume and fullness by blow drying hair smooth with Big Sexy Hair Big Altitude and a medium round brush. Part from ear to ear to separate the front from the back. Starting with the back, section into large pieces, spray each with 450° Protect and wrap-curl around a large-bore curling iron, leaving out the ends. Brick-lay the sections halfway up the head, pinning each into place. Using a slight zig-zag parting, curl the sides in the same manner, curling under and backcombing slightly at the base. (The zig-zag will avoid creating harsh lines when hair is combed out.) Section the top and lightly backcomb each at the base. Spray with 450° Headset and hold the curling iron at the base for a few seconds to ensure lift, then continue wrapping. Allow curls to cool, remove pins and slightly backcomb each section from the root to mid-shaft. Make a deep side part and pin hair behind the ear on one side. Work hair into the classic Marilyn shape using Spray & Play.
