Get the Look: Kirsten Dunst & Aubrey Plaza's Emmys Retro Hair

Actresses Kirsten Dunst and Aubrey Plaza both took to the 2024 Emmy Awards red carpet with retro-inspired hairstyles with a modern twist.

Here's how their stylists used Olaplex products to pull off their looks.

Kirsten Dunst's "Boudoir Punk" Updo

Celebrity hairstylist Cervando Maldonado gave Kirsten Dunst a 1930s “boudoir punk” updo, a process he documented in a behind-the-scenes Instagram Reel.

To complement the actress' maroon Chanel gown, Cervando and Kirsten decided her hair should project a Marlene Dietrich vibe with an edge. “It’s a little punk, to be honest,” Cervando says. “And because the outfit had kind of a boudoir feeling to it, we wanted the hair to look a little tousled in the back.”

The look, Cervando says, speaks to the return of the red-carpet updo.

“What I'm seeing for this awards season and for future trends is hair that's been swept up off the neck. We love hair down and it’s beautiful, but this is nice for a change," he says.

"Whether it be in a knot or a ponytail, some kind of loose updo, or something unique like we did for Kirsten, this is something that we're going to be seeing more of.”

Products Used:

First, Cervando started with Kirsten’s hair damp, then spritzed Volumizing Blow Dry Mist through the hair on the roots and through the ends. Afterwards, he applied a little bit of Nº.7 Bonding Oil on his hands and lightly raked it through the whole head, using a brush to distribute everything evenly.

“The bonding oil is good for shine and making the hair smooth and giving it some polish,” he says.

Next, Cervando blow-dried the hair section by section, starting in the front and parting the hair on the side with a comb. He began blow-drying the hair around her face by taking a big section and blowing it out towards the face, then brushing it over to make it smooth, adding clips to the top to hold it in place.

Next, Cervando blow-dried and smoothed the hair section by section. At the top of her crown, he added a Velcro roller for some lift and let it set for 10 minutes.

Afterwards, he pulled out the clips and lightly sprayed 4D Clean Volume Dry Shampoo through the roots and lightly on the ends to give it more fullness and texture.

Then, Cervando brushed Kirsten’s hair over and behind the ears on both sides and gave it a light twist behind her head. He pulled the hair up to create volume visible from the front of the style.

“Once pulling that hair up, I started adding long, big gold bobby pins to secure and put into place from the bottom all the way down to the nape of the neck,” he says. “It was strategically placed, but made to look as if it was effortlessly done.

"After that, I took black bobby pins for a little bit of drama, and to add to that ‘30s style, and tightened the hair up behind the ear to create some more shape around the face.”

For the final step, Cervando sprayed a little more of the 4D Clean Volume Dry Shampoo to add texture, and applied more Nº.7 Bonding Oil to shine up the sides and take away any frizz.

Aubrey Plaza's Half-Up Bombshell Hair

To top off Emmy nominee Aubrey Plaza's much-discussed yellow Loewe gown for the 2024 Emmys, celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend worked the Emmy nominee on a chic, 1960s half-up hairstyle inspired by ‘60s French icons Catherine Deneuve and Brigitte Bardot.

Townsend posted a carousel to Instagram with behind-the-scenes peeks at the hair prep for "The White Lotus" actress.

"I was able to see the gorgeous Loewe gown Aubrey had chosen to wear a few days ago and my head exploded with inspiration," he says. "We decided that a half-up hairstyle would best suit the silhouette of the dress."

First, Aubrey prepped her hair by cleansing with  No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner.

Mark applied a few drops of Nº.7 Bonding Oil in her wet hair and combed through. “This lightweight oil is amazing to seal the cuticle, protect the hair from heat styling, and adds tons of shine to the hair,” he says.

Next, Mark added Volumizing Blow Dry Mist to her hair and blow-dried with a round mixed-bristle brush to get as much movement and volume into her hair as possible. “I made sure to spray this on her roots at the crown to get lots of lift and volume.”

Mark then wrapped large sections of her hair around a 1-inch curling iron to add loose waves and more movement. “To give her lots of long lasting volume at the crown, I liberally sprayed Olaplex 4D Clean Volume Dry Shampoo on her roots and lightly back-combed the hair for lift.”

For the next step, Mark gathered the hair from the sides and top and wrapped them in a small bun and secured it just under the crown with eight Day Rate Beauty hairpins that match her mink-brown hair color. “This gave her that ‘60s feeling we really wanted,” he adds.

For the final touch, Mark mixed a small amount of No. 6 Bond Smoother with a few drops of  No.7 Bonding Oil together in his hands, then raked it through Aubrey's hair in the back to tame any flyaway hairs and add loads of shine.

To keep her freshly-cut fringe nice and full, he brushed it with 4D Clean Volume Dry Shampoo. “I like to use dry shampoo on bangs instead of hairspray," he says, "because hairspray can leave them looking wet and heavy, whereas dry shampoo keeps them full."
