Get the Look: Long-Lasting, Voluminous Waves

Curl specialist and Sam Villa ambassador Lindsey Olson shares her techniques for creating long-lasting, voluminous waves that have body and movement.

It starts with a blowout for volume and smoothness, then boosting the waves with a curling iron. “Using multiple brushes in your blowout before you do your iron work can really heighten your results and make waves last for days,” she says.

Here are the brushes she uses, and why she chose them:

  • Sam Villa Artist Series Spiral Thermal Brush "for the long nylon bristles that create lift and the boar bristles that provide tension," Lindsey says. " Both help create shine and control at the base and mids."
  • Sam Villa Signature Series Thermal Round Brush "for fuller movement at the ends."
  • Sam Villa Signature Series Paddle Brush "for maximum control while wrap-drying to build movement."
  • Sam Villa Signature Series Styling Brush "for the combination of boar bristles and tourmaline-infused nylon bristles that create a beautiful, smooth, frizz-free polish."

Blow-Dry Technique:

  • Always use a blow-dry product like Redken Quick Blow Out to protect and speed up drying time.
  • Blow-dry base first, then mids and ends.
  • Brush on top of hair at the base (versus underneath) for more polish.
  • The higher hair is held up, the more volume is created.
  • Back: Flat-wrap dry (using an X motion) with a paddle brush to maximize movement. Once dry, use the mixed boar/ nylon bristle round brush on the mids, and round thermal brush on the ends.
  • After drying, twist section and let it cool for more bounce.

Iron Work:

  • Apply thermal spray section-by-section when working (base, mid, ends).
  • Using a Sam Villa Artist Series 2-in-1 Marcel Iron and Wand, loosely flat-wrap hair on the sides around barrel with low elevation to create movement and volume.
  • Finish waves with a styling brush to smooth and add shine.
