Barber educator, platform artist, and industry advocate Rodrick Samuels has added another honor to his long list of accomplishments: the Educator of the Decade Award at the "Barber Grammys" presented at the Connecticut Barber Expo.
The award recognizes a leader whose work in barbering education has helped shape careers, raise industry standards, and support the next generation of licensed professionals.
“Barbering changed my life," Samuels says, "and I've made it my mission to help education change the lives of others."
Barber entrepreneur and influencer Byrd Mena presented Samuels with the honor during the awards ceremony at the Connecticut Barber Expo, one of the largest industry gatherings in the U.S.
Honorees are chosen by a panel of leaders across the global barbering community including educators, platform artists, brand executives, school owners, and influencers.
Samuels has devoted his 30-plus year career to advancing barbering education and industry standards. As co-founder and Director of Education at Hair Lab Detroit Barber School, he has shaped and enhanced educator development, teaching curriculums, licensing standards, workforce readiness, mentorship, and student success.
Samuels' status as a respected advisor and advocate across the barbering and beauty industries has influenced thousands of professionals and students. Among his many accolades is Educator of the Year by the North American Hairstyling Awards in 2023.
"For me, the greatest award has always been watching a student discover what's possible," Samuels says. "This recognition simply reminds me that the work matters."
The Connecticut Barber Expo was founded by celebrity barber, educator, and entrepreneur Jay Majors. It brings together barbers, instructors, competitors, manufacturers, and brands for education, competition, networking, professional development, and community.
