Roots Salon ➤

Business owners Naomi Prusinksi and Shannon Lopez have owned Roots Salon, a Redken Elite salon with locations in Brookfield and Greendale, for seven years. The duo employs 55, including lead stylist Nicole Champeau, who describes the interior as “earthy, neutral and calm.” The acid-stained concrete floor gives way to three treatment rooms, four pedicure tubs, three nail tables and 16 styling stations. “The typical client is looking for something trendy, something new,” says Champeau. “They are a bit ahead of the game in terms of Wisconsin, so they are looking for new techniques and trends.”

Impressions Day Spa ➤

Situated alongside the Milwaukee River is Impressions Day Spa, a world-class spa that caters to the urban Mequon area. Within the loft-like 4,800-square-foot space, clients can receive skincare, nail and exceptional color and color correction services. “We were green before green was cool,” says Kitty Tierney, who has owned the spa for 29 years. “Much of our decor is reused or renewed. The mirrors are made from recycled copper from the old Philadelphia Civic Center.” The 46-person staff caters to an eclectic group, ranging from “a senator, to a newscaster to a business owner,” Tierney says. “I know being all things for all people doesn’t always work out, but it’s worked for us.”

Erik Of Norway Salon & Spa ➤

For over 40 years, Erik of Norway Salon & Spa has been an essential business in the bustling Milwaukee community. Two years ago Jason and Shani Wiggins took over the 6,500-square-foot salon and spa, complete with 42 chairs, four nail stations, three pedicure stations and five treatment rooms. The Wiggins employ 30 stylists, many of whom have been with the salon for at least 10 years. “We have almost zero turnover,” says Dawn LeMay, director of salon operations. “We try to hire people who we think will be a part of our team forever.” LeMay credits the education programs for keeping staff motivated. “We have nationally recognized educators from Aveda and Goldwell visit to teach the staff, as well as a nine-month program that every employee is required to go through,” LeMay says.
