Color How-To: Chunky '90s Revival

When it comes to fashion, the '90s are back, and the same goes for hair. The chunky highlights look is reemerging as a color trend, and Sherry Ratay is here to share how to achieve it using three different formulas down the hair fiber, which creates a soft root area and a bright and light mid-end area. For more education from Ratay, register for one of her classes at IBS New York at the Javits Center from March 13 - 15, 2022.

  1. Begin by sectioning out the entire front and back hairline to create a focus of lightness within the nape and front frame to replicate the chunky but current trend of the '90s.
  2. Within this halo section, create lightness with babylights and lift to pale yellow.
  3. Analyze the hair living on top of the head and create a soft balayage within that top panel.
  4. To soften the visual starting point of lightness, apply a root shadow application (Formula 2), working on a diagonal line and only 1/2 to 3/4 inches down the shaft of the hair.
  5. Apply Formula 3 to the mid-area of the hair, leaving the last 2 to 3 inches out.
  6. Apply Formula 4 to the ends.
