How to Create a Sleek and Braided Double Ponytail

Perfect for summer, this high two-tail pony with a sleek top, glam braid and wavy ends is the perfect style for any summer soirée. Denman ambassador Amanda Elaine (@stylistamandaelaine) demonstrates how to create the look, and how using specific brushes in each step makes all the difference. Read the step by step below, and find the full tutorial video here.

  1. To get a smooth look from the root down, use the Denman Round Brush and overdirect hair forward and then backward using a blow-dryer with heat.
  2. Next, use the Denman Paddle Brush to detangle the hair. Then, use the Denman D82M The Finisher to collect hair into a ponytail.
  3. Before securing the elastic, use the Denman D92 Edge Tamer Brush. The 1- to 1.5-inch wide brush allows you to comb hair into your hand to collect hair.
  4. Make two ponytails from ear to ear, on a curve. Braid each ponytail, and then clip the top braid out of the way.
  5. To create the glam wave, use a straight wand. Use the Paddle Brush  to detangle the ponytail. Take 1-inch sections and curl, placing the wand underneath the section and twisting it around, flattening when you reach the top. Slide the hair off of the barrel and set using a setting clip. Repeat until the ponytail is complete.
  6. Spray the Denman Style and Shine Brush with a lightweight hairspray and brush through the curls. Continue layering in hairspray and brush through. For a sleek version, apply a shine spray onto the Style and Shine Brush and brush through.
  7. Move on to the braided section. Place the braided section on top of the bottom section, making sure it sits where you like it. Take a 1- or 2-inch hair pin and secure ponytails together by sewing through.
  8. Apply a strong hold hairspray onto the D92 Edge Tamer Brush for finishing. Follow with some shine spray for a reflective, sleek quality. Once everything is in place, use the brush handle to smooth out the nape.
  9. Take a section of the hair and wrap it around the elastic to cover it. Secure with a standard bobby pin.
  10. Use the Paddle Brush to open up the hair and create volume in the ponytail. Use volumizing spray to enhance. The nylon and boar bristles of the shine brush can help to distribute product evenly. Backbrush lightly at the ridges of the waves in the ponytail and mist details with hairspray.
