Tips for Coloring Hair to Complement Skin Tone

Sherry Ratay, celebrity colorist and IBS New York educator, shares her process for formulating color to complement skin tone. For more education from Ratay, register for one of her classes at IBS New York at the Javits Center from March 13 - 15, 2022.

I begin with analyzing the three most important factors when coloring someone’s hair for the first time: the skin tone, eye color and natural haircolor. In my model here, this is what I see with her skin tone: hints of soft ginger and peach, which direct me to place a warm tone on the fiber; and prominent blue eyes with a green tint, which confirms to avoid a dark shade. I need to live within the blonde levels, levels to 6 to 10.  Once I take a look at her natural haircolor, I confirm that I see soft golden hues.

With all three of these factors, I decide to create a soft level 7 golden apricot with strawberry pieces woven within.

I first create a multi-dimensional look alternating formulas 1,2 and 3 in foils, giving more attention to her front curtain bang with lighter pieces. Once I reach a yellow stage within foils with the Blonde Life bleach, I shampoo and towel dry 80 percent. Then, I saturate the entire head with formula 4 and process for 15 minutes.
