A pixie with a soft top layer cascading over a shorter nape and sides is a thing of beauty. Add dimensional color—chef’s kiss!
Anna Peters, Sam Villa ArTeam educator and owner of re:TREAT Color + Hair Design and Studio in Clovis, CA, recently cut a beautiful summer blonde version using multiple shears and a razor to achieve the perfect mix of easy-going layers and texture.
“I often use multiple cutting tools with a style like this," Petersw says, "because each one creates a different type of texture for a really cool end result."
Here is her expert advice on how to level up your pixies.
5 Tips for Cutting a Better Pixie
Tools Used:
- Sam Villa Artist Series Slide Cutting Shear
- Sam Villa Signature Series Swivel Shear 5.5”
- Sam Villa Signature Series InvisiBlend Shear
- Sam Villa Signature Series Razor
- Use the slide cutting shear to elevate the crown and remove weight and length by slide-cutting from short to long. Hair slips along the blades creating a beautiful, gentle, soft edge.
- The 5.5" swivel shear is good for getting in and detailing the tight spaces around the ears and nape. It allows cutting in awkward areas while keeping the hand position relaxed.
- A razor is good for carving in texture and removing weight. Use a light touch, keep the wrist straight, and use your fingers to rotate the swivel in any direction to create all kinds of fun texture.
- For the fringe, overdirect everything from the front corners to the center shortest point in the middle. Point-cut with a slide cutting shear. Then, slide shears down the fringe to detail and create a soft edge to blend them effortlessly into the sides.
- For an extra pop of froth on the crown: gather hair, elevate it straight up at the highest point of head, twist and remove weight mid-length through the ends using the InvisiBlend shear. The 23-tooth convex blade design diffuses weight and creates flawless transition that enhances natural movement.
