Meet The Guy Who Went From a Marine to a Celebrity Colorist

When Daniel Moon (@majormoonn) was 18 and stationed on a Marine base in Okinawa, Japan, he never dreamed he would one day be a celebrity haircolorist. Fast-forward to today, he’s a salon owner, a haircolor expert, a clothing designer and the go-to stylist for some of Hollywood’s A-listers.

AHA MOMENT

I was on base in the Marines, and my girlfriend at the time was working at a salon. She was always sending me pictures of what she was doing, and I felt inspired. I decided I had to ditch the uniform and get creative.

TRAINING DAYS

Andy LeCompte Salon in LA is where I honed my skills. It happened to be next to an art gallery called M+B Art; that introduced me to colors that I later translated to vivids on my celebrity clients, and the rest is history.

CLAIM TO FAME

Coloring the hair of celebs like Kanye West, Katy Perry, Madonna and Zoë Kravitz, and opening my own salon, Hair Los Angeles, in LA’s downtown Arts District.

SOCIAL BUTTERFLY

You can find me on Instagram at @majormoonn, and my salon’s handle is @hairlosangeles. I use the hashtag #majormooncolor.

WORDS TO LIVE BY

“A rose is a rose even though it doesn’t know it exists. There are no intentions with its beauty—it just comes and then it goes.”—Jason Dill, streetwear designer

SECRET WEAPONS

My must-have products are Virtue ColorKick, Virtue Purifying Leave-In Conditioner and Sachajuan Thickening Shampoo.

MY MENTORS

Editorial hairstylist Christiaan Houtebos is still one of my closest mentors. He taught me to approach hair in a more thoughtful and artful way. He’s very cognizant of a person’s energy and translates that into their hairstyle.

BRIGHT FUTURE

I’m working on some new merchandise for my streetwear line called HAIR and also launching more of my signature Major Aprons. There’s a lot more in the works toward the end of the year, too. Stay tuned.
