Common Haircare Mistakes, According to Professional Hairstylists

We all have different hair types/textures and therefore our hair has different needs. But there are common haircare mistakes that we should all avoid for the sake of our hair health. Below are common haircare mistakes that Sharie Wilson & Tonya Thompson, co-founders of DreamGirls salon and haircare brand, suggest how to avoid hair breakage, heat damage, and other unintentional hair woes along with products they recommend for healthy hair.

Wilson and Thompson are professional hairstylists with over a decade of experience working with all hair types and textures of all ages. Here are their suggestions:

  • Applying too much heat styling can weaken the hair shaft, especially if you are constantly applying high heat to dirty hair full of product buildup. This will cause breakage which will lead to not only thinning hair, but hair loss. We recommend setting your styling tools to the lowest heat setting if applying heat to your hair daily (which we do not recommend.) We also recommend applying a heat protectant to your hair prior to styling to help minimize breakage.
  • Another common mistake we see with thinning hair is when clients wear their hair in tight ponytails. The constant tugging and pulling when your hair is tied too tight can lead to breakage. When doing clients' hair we notice the line of demarcation where the hair has been tied. In this area, we will find breakage which is a clear sign ponytails are being worn too tight. We highly recommend using elastic-free hair ties or making sure that if you do use elastic hair ties you give your hair a break from wearing ponytails daily, in addition to not tying your hair too tight.
  • You can't begin your healthy hair journey without a trim first. Failing to trim before beginning your healthy hair journey, will allow the broken ends to keep traveling up the hair shaft.
  • Detangling your hair incorrectly can damage your hair. Make sure to detangle properly to retain your hair growth. We suggest using the DreamGirls TLC Comb-Out.
  • Avoiding trims can cause more damage than you think. Getting trims regularly ensures healthy hair from root to tip. Signs you may need a trim are tangled, see-through ends, and excessive shedding.
  • Constant manipulation and touching of your hair can cause unnecessary damage on your hair journey.
  • A lot of factors can cause split ends such as heat, the weather/ wind, hot water, and not combing your hair properly.
  • Hair growth is mistaken for retention. Retention is maintaining your hair growth and there are products to help retain healthier, stronger & longer hair. We recommend using the DreamGirls Revival Deep Treatment.
  • Forgetting to take pictures during your healthy hair journey. We encourage our clients and customers to take pictures monthly of their progress on their healthy hair journey to see how far they've come.
