Miss USA crowned a new beauty queen on Monday evening, and American Salon headed to Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport, Louisiana to watch the big win. (In case you missed it, Miss Nebraska Sarah Rose Summers, 23, took home the crown, replacing Miss District of Columbia Kara McCullough.) Before the main event, which was partly sponsored by Farouk Systems, we caught up with celeb guests and former Miss USA winners as they walked the red carpet and dished on hair, hair, hair!

What’s your go-to hairstyle for these events?
“I have three different hair looks today. I start out with natural and then I put it in a pony and then a top knot to show off the evening gown. I’m always wearing a top knot. And it’s in now! I have these mommy hairs coming in. After I had the kids, you lose your hair, and when it comes back, it comes back shorter.”
NL: “[My hair has] been the same for 15 years. [Laughs] I started losing my hair way before the kids.”

What’s your best tip for pageant hair?
“Have a best friend who’s a hairstylist. You can bring them everywhere! I use hair powder to give me coverage. And I think you need a great shine product, as well. You have to make sure it looks healthy and happy. The most important thing is about how you wear it. That goes for clothing, hair, makeup. It’s about being confident, owning it, and working with what you’ve got.”

How did you style your hair tonight?
“First of all, the CHI Hair Serum and Silk Infusion—don’t even play with me. I go backstage when the pageant is over, and I stuff it in my thigh-high Stuart Weitzman boots. I swear that’s the truth. I love it for my hair and for my skin. It’s not greasy but gets rid of frizz and adds moisture.”

What’s your favorite way to style your hair?

Nick Lachey: “Mucho, mucho hairspray!”
Jeff Timmons: “I keep it short, wake up, put some gel in it and that’s it.”
Justin Jeffries: “My favorite thing to do with my hair is to let the wind blow it.”
Drew Lachey: “My favorite thing to do with my hair is to put a hat on.”

How did you style your hair tonight?
“I’ve been using CHI products all week. Silk Infusion has been my life saver in this humidity, and Iron Guard. I wish I had the CHI team when I competed back in 1998.”

What’s your craziest hair disaster?
“When I was competing at Miss Washington, I took the hot rollers out of my hair right before I went onstage. I must have forgotten a couple of rollers or over-teased it, because my mother told me later it looked like I had a squirrel’s nest in the back of my head. It was a hair disaster!”
