Justine Marjan Shares The Advice That Shaped Her Career

A few of Hollywood's biggest names have more than fame in common: hairstylist Justine Marjan (@justinemarjan), who’s responsible for styling their manes. Marjan started as an assistant to Jen Atkin, and has built an empire of her own, counting celebrities like Olivia Culpo, Khloe Kardashian and Ashley Graham as regular clients—talk about a glow up. American Salon sat down with Marjan to get the dish on her best advice, her can't-live-without products and the Instagram Stories she can’t stand.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
There’s enough work to go around for all of us! One person’s success does not dampen yours, and we can all rise up together. It’s not a competition. Don’t compare yourself to others.

If you could do only one hairstyle for the rest of your life, what would it be?
To be honest, I am super low maintenance with my own hair and I love when my hair looks healthy, shiny and classic. If I could only wear one style for the rest of my life, it would likely be how I wear my hair now. I get a gloss every couple months to add richness to the color and a keratin treatment once a year to tame frizz.

You’ve accomplished so much so quickly in your career. What are you most proud of?
One of my biggest career highlights has been leading the hair for shows backstage at New York Fashion Week with TRESemmé. It had always been a dream of mine to work at fashion week, and I’m so honored to be going into my fifth season as a key hairstylist. One of my favorite fashion week moments was when I did a slanted bun at Cushnie et Ochs’ last show before the designers split up.

What was your very first Instagram post?
I post too much to find out, but I'm pretty sure it was a picture of my fiancé.

We all have one…what’s your biggest social media pet peeve?
When people talk in too many consecutive Insta stories! I always end up exiting or skipping through.

What are your current must-have beauty products?
Lip balm and hand lotion. I can’t survive without them. My faves right now are the CocoKind MYMATCHA All-Over Moisture Stick, Oribe Cote d'Azur Nourishing Hand Crème, L’occitane Pure Shea Butter and Fresh Sugar Coconut Hydrating Lip Balm.
