Limited Edition Hair Color Celebrates Solar Eclipse

If you’re already missing the drama and beauty of Monday’s rare total eclipse, don’t worry—you don’t have to wait until 2024 to celebrate again. Aveda and Ian Michael Black, Global Artistic Director for Hair Color, teamed up to create Lunar Blue, a limited edition, custom blue-gray color. But there’s a catch: The only way to score a tube is to enter a special Instagram-exclusive contest.

“One of the things that the Aveda network really loves is the creativity of Aveda Full Spectrum, how customizable it is and how one can create a unique trend focused color in seconds,” says Black. “Lunar Blue was inspired by the solar eclipse. That unique and rare light—as the sky transforms when the moon passes over the sun. It’s an incredible moment of twilight tones merging with mid-day sun to create a perfect balance of blue and violet. It’s a tone that feels both fresh, current and individual, and fits perfectly into the zeitgeist of today.”

This isn’t the first artisanal color that Black has created—he previously developed custom colors for premier giveaways and the popular Aveda Advanced Academy class, Color Culture. This special Instagram exclusive is designed to celebrate the joy of the solar eclipse and give the opportunity for anyone to have the chance to win this exclusive color.
