Knowing how to use a tool in multiple ways to achieve different results is beneficial for any stylist to save money, space, and time.
Roger Molina, Sam Villa ArTeam member and Master Stylist at Lunatic Fringe in Park City, UT, breaks down the difference between twist-out and twist-on waves. The subtle change in technique using the same tool can make dramatic differences in the finish.
The magic is in how the hair is wrapped, released, and directed.
Notes:
- Take vertical sections from the parting.
- Section width should match the width of the iron. (Molina is using a Sam Villa Artist Series 2-in-1 Marcel Iron & Wand 1.5.)
Twist-Out Waves: A more open pattern that is fluid and the soft texture groups together.
- Insert the iron barrel from above.
- Wrap back and away with a subtle flat twist on bottom and flat twist at the top.
- Slide down and repeat down the section.
Twist-On Waves: A more defined, polished wave that breaks up independently.
- Insert the iron barrel from the bottom.
- Working back and away, wrap section and then twist out.
- Wrap back up to the twist spot to give it heat. The tighter the twist, the tighter the curl will be.
Slide down and repeat down the section.
