The Small Decisions That Make a Great Blowout

“A great blowout is a series of small decisions made well."

That's the wisdom from hairstylist Adrian Sandoval, a Sam Villa ArTeam educator, who breaks that series down into four reliable steps. Each is based on a technique that yields predictable, long-lasting results.

"Section by section, pass by pass," Sandoval says. "Building tension, shape, movement, and shine until the hair starts responding exactly the way you envisioned." Check out Sandoval's technique below and then review the steps!

1. Prep

Apply heat protectant, volume-building product at roots, and smoothing product to mid-ends. Rough-dry hair until 70–80% dry. (Sandoval uses the Sam Villa Pro Light Ionic Blow Dryer.)

2. Brush & Section

Use a large round brush to work in sections that are the same size or slightly smaller than the brush.

Place the brush under the section at the base of the head, and point-dry away from the roots to smooth the cuticle. Pull with tension while rotating the brush. For maximum volume, overdirect upward for on-base placement. (Sandoval uses the Sam Villa Signature Series Thermal Round Brush - Large for this.)

3. Place Rollers

After each section is finished, position a roller with on-base placement. Secure with sectioning clips and let it cool to lock in volume. The longer the hair, the bigger the roller.

For the crown section, rollers should be on base for lift. Direct side sections half off base, away from the face, and direct back sections horizontal and half off base, wrapping hair backward and downward.

4. Remove Rollers & Style

When hair is completely dry, remove rollers gently and brush out with fingers or a paddle brush before applying a light hairspray.
