Behind the Scenes of October's Cover Shoot

When creating Luna, her first-ever collection, Charmayne Robinson never dreamed she’d earn top honors for her work at the Australian Hair Fashion Awards (AHFA), let alone be featured on this month’s cover and inside feature, but that’s exactly what happened to the Brisbane, Australia-based colorist of Papas + Pace.

“I mainly wanted to gain experience and build a portfolio,” says Robinson. “Naturally, being named the AHFA’s 2018 Colorist of the Year exceeded all my expectations, and receiving recognition in American Salon has been the icing on the cake.”

To create the cover look, Robinson teamed up with celebrated photographer Andrew O’Toole, shooting at his studios in Melbourne as well as at the L’Oréal Academy in Brisbane this past November.

“He’s one of the top hair fashion photographers in the world and tuned in quickly to the precise mood and look I was seeking,” says Robinson, who played up her moon theme, using color and crescent sections in the short hairstyles to accentuate movement and fluidity.

“For some of the looks I would section out the hair, painting the whole segments, and for others I would subdivide and melt various hues,” she says. Dressing the models in white elevated the out-of-this-world vibe. “The whole collection is fashion-forward, marrying cut and color in a very contemporary way.”
