A Family Affair

For the Ciampa family in Lexington, MA, beauty is the tie that binds. Together, brothers Tony, Philip, Jr. and Joe Ciampa help manage the four salons their father, Philip, started 30 years ago after he moved to the United States from Italy. And when it came time to remodel the flagship location about a year ago, that, too, was a family affair. "The salon had green furniture that was more than 10 years old," says Tony Ciampa, who did most of the planning for the remodeling. "It was time for a change."

After only a month of research and preparation, the entire family pitched in with the construction and finished the transformation in just five days.

A new wood floor, plenty of track lighting and 14 ultra-sleek Belvedere styling stations imbued the 3,600-square-foot space with a modern yet timeless European aesthetic. Tony wanted clean, straight lines, so he chose the Mr. Mo chair from Welonda, which has five sleek chrome legs instead of a clunky wide base. The walls were painted serene shades of tan and lavender, while black and silver were used to spruce up the reception area.

Tony also took comments from clients into consideration when planning the new layout. "We've always heard customers say that they don't like staring at themselves in the mirror when they have perm rods or foils in their hair," he says. So he made room for a separate color station where clients who are having their hair processed can sit at a long wood table—looking at magazines instead of into a mirror.

Although Tony says he's always keeping track of new trends, he doesn't think he'll have to remodel this salon again anytime soon. "Everybody loves the new design," he says. "It's classic."
