Graham Webb was born into poverty with undiagnosed spina bifida in London, but he beat the odds, founding a multimillion-dollar company, Graham Webb International, which he sold to the Wella Corporation in 2001. Recently he became a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, which means he can use the title Graham Webb, M.B.E., from now on. Webb is literally an example of mind over matter. When he left Northbrook School in London in 1961, his final report called him "lazy, silly, bone idle and apparently content to remain so." In 2000, he returned to Northbrook to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award. No wonder he wrote the book OUT OF THE BOTTLE (The Webb Press, 2004) about his incredible journey. Born on April 4, 1947—it was Good Friday, which he points out is a "day widely associated with suffering"—Webb never took no for an answer. A born entrepreneur, he made light of 62 job application rejections and went on to build an empire. And despite his physical infirmities, he married and fathered four children. A man who liked to think big, Webb's first business cards for the salon he opened at Lee Green included the words, England, U.K., which "implied that people in other countries might even want to have their hair cut at my little salon."
