Big Business

Hardly a day goes by that I don't stop to realize that I really do have one of the best jobs in the world. As publisher of this magazine, it's been my great privilege to visit salons across the country and meet some of the most compassionate, caring individuals in the world who possess an eye for artistry and a brilliant entrepreneurial spirit. I mean people like Horst Rechelbacher, who's celebrating 50 years in the profession—a major milestone that American Salon paid special tribute to in our October issue. A true visionary and successful salon owner, Horst used his knowledge of pure plants to found Aveda. To this day, he and his salon network embrace global consciousness, a commitment that extends far beyond the world of beauty.

Speaking of entrepreneurial spirit, the Global Salon Business Awards are in full swing to honor the best of the best June 3-6, 2006, in Barcelona, Spain. As you may know, the Global Salon Business Awards are produced by the B.E.S.T. Foundation (Business Education for Salons Today) and was formed to support the continued growth and development of the professional salon industry on a global basis. Jeannette and Richard Koops of v.o.f. Silhouet, Netherlands, aptly put it after winning the GSBA in London last year when they said, "Each day when we go to work, there's a smile on our face when we see the award in our salon. Our lives will never be the same after this thrilling experience. We've been able to grow both mentally and personally, which will affect our salon business."
