Miller, who's worked on the hair for movies such as Dances with Wolves and Because I Said So, bought the salon in the '80s after the original owner retired. She has since established a reputation for excellence in the area, specializing in haircolor and building a large clientele. "It's a busy salon, with many people coming and going, but it doesn't feel like a whirlwind," she says. With hardwood floors, soft music and an Asian influence, the décor is soothing and helps create a social environment.

Miller puts a strong emphasis on education and building a quality staff. Some of the 16 staff members have been working at Salon One for more than 20 years. "Our success is due in great part to our staff. They are supportive of each other," Miller says. "You get a real sense of a team atmosphere when you visit."

Miller says that this attitude sets Salon One apart from the other salons she has worked with around the country. She believes that her staff in South Dakota has a mind-set focused on outstanding customer service, a quality she feels is rare in salons in larger urban areas.

With business booming, Miller is looking to do more of the same in upcoming years. The salon will continue to stress education and the importance of staying up-to-date on what's new in fashion and beauty. "Our clientele is sophisticated," she says. "They know what's going on all over the world, and we work hard to bring that to South Dakota."—SAMANTHA BEERMAN
