Matrix debuts its reinvented Biolage product line in this American Salon exclusive featuring fresh looks that usher in a new season.
Outside, the streets of New York City were covered with snow, but inside Pier 59 Studios in Manhattan, Matrix Artistic Director Nick Stenson was creating invigorating looks that welcome spring and showcase Biolage products that solve hair challenges like frizz and faded color. This month, Matrix is unveiling exciting changes to its Biolage line, with sleek repackaging and some enhanced formulas. “Biolage is a rejuvenating collection with a unique botanical ingredient system,” Stenson says. “These enriched formulas bring back the silky, healthy shine nature gave hair, and can create beautiful, healthy-looking hair for anyone.”

IMAGE ABOVE - To create these soft waves, Nick Stenson washed hair with Biolage VolumeBloom Shampoo and Conditioner, then sprayed roots with Biolage VolumeBloom Full-Lift Volumizing Spray. Next, he blow-dried with a round brush for volume before using a large-barrel Marcel iron to create waves from mid-lengths to ends. He pinned, then sprayed with Biolage Complete Control Hair Spray. After releasing the set, he brushed through and formed a sweeping side part.
IMAGE ABOVE - For this voluminous updo, Stenson began with VolumeBloom Shampoo and Conditioner, then sprayed at the roots with VolumeBloom Full-Lift Volumizing Spray and blow-dried with a round brush. Using a large-barrel Marcel iron, he created lift at the roots and light curl at the ends. After pinning and releasing the set, he separated the front sections from the back. Starting at the back, he backbrushed locks to create a cushion, then folded and pinned into a contoured shape. Stenson directed the sides into a sweeping silhouette and at the top, backbrushed for soft height, then pinned and sprayed with Biolage Styling Finishing Spritz.
ABOVE IMAGE - After prepping hair with Biolage SmoothProof Shampoo and Conditioner, Stenson applied Biolage SmoothProof Leave-in Cream to damp hair and blow-dried using a round brush. Once hair was dry, starting at the right side, he created a vertical section. With a Marcel iron, he formed a rope curl and directed away from the face; as he moved around the head, he directed toward the face. He finished by raking Biolage SmoothProof Serum through hair with his fingers for a distinct wave pattern.
IMAGE ABOVE - For this loose boho-chic braid, Stenson used Biolage Smoothproof Shampoo and Conditioner, then applied SmoothProof Leave-in Cream to damp hair and blow-dried using a round brush. Beginning at the mid-lengths, he fishtail braided locks and pulled to loosen.
IMAGE ABOVE - To achieve these vibrant red curls, Stenson called on Biolage ColorLast Shampoo and Conditioner, then sprayed Biolage ColorLast Shine Shake. He then layered Whipped Volume Mousse on top and blow-dried using a round brush. Once hair was dry, he sprayed vertical sub-sections with Styling Thermal-Active Setting Spray and curled it. Next, Stenson used his fingers to create texture in the hair, and for added shine, used Biolage Styling Thermal-Active Repair Gloss.
