Editors Blog: Good Service Never Goes Out Of Style

Kelsey Murray here, the new digital editor at American Salon magazine. This is my first job in the professional beauty industry, so follow along as I navigate my way through beauty shows, brand events, photo shoots and interviews. This blog is a behind-the-scenes look at my first year in the industry.

Inside the June issue of American Salon, you’ll find a story I wrote about Salvatore Fodera, the OMC Hairworld and OMC Prestige Club world president and CEO, who is also the owner of Salon Fodera, a luxury salon in the five-star St. Regis Hotel in New York City.

Since becoming OMC president, Fodera has left most of the operations of his salon in the hands of his two sons—Gianni, hairstylist and world champion, and Vincent, hairstylist and educator—while he travels the world, building the future of OMC heritage in the world of competition, fashion and education.

Before our first meeting, I realized I had never been inside the renowned hotel and it certainly hadn’t donned on me that it could be home to such a beautiful salon. Upon entering I noticed how attentive the staff was—hanging up my coat, offering me a beverage. Fodera was on hand to greet me himself, showing me around the well-kept salon, complete with leather chairs, a shoeshine attendant and a manicurist.

I realized two things that day—although my first year in the industry is coming to a close in a matter of months. Firstly, there is clearly so much more I have to learn. And secondly, there is something to be said about a salon with history and prestige. Year after year, day after day, good service never seems to go out of style.
