Jason Yates began his career 25 years ago as a hairdresser in the UK, working his way up from salon apprentice to manager and eventually managing director for a group of 22 salons. During that time, he also worked as a platform artist and educator for a hair care manufacturer, exposing him to a different part of the industry that opened a career path beyond the salon.
Eventually, Jason moved to the US to become an artistic director for a manufacturer, where he worked on everything from education and shows to product development. By the time he left the company, he was head of sales and marketing. In 2012, Jason joined John Paul Mitchell Systems as the vice president of marketing, where he leads the marketing strategy and global vision for all JPMS brands.
While his journey from hairdresser to executive may be unusual, Jason observes: "We work in an amazing industry that allows us to go in many different directions, especially if you are a young professional stylist. My career may not be the typical direction for a hairdresser to go, but it's certainly one that can happen."
Jason is most passionate about helping others reach their full potential. "It's very fulfilling to help other people grow," he says, "and it helps me grow as well."
When he’s not working or attending meetings and events around the world on behalf of JPMS, Jason enjoys spending time with his family and pursuing his other creative passion: cooking.
