Just in time for its 20th anniversary, José Luis Salon in Austin, Texas, unveiled its redesigned, 4,000-square-foot space. The bright, contemporary interior hints at 1940s Hollywood glamour, with large chandeliers and classic artwork. Owners José Luis Buitron and Bill Pitts say one of the biggest considerations was to create an open space that would be suitable for community engagements like fashion events and charity benefits. "Our clients are part of everything in Austin," Buitron says. "We want this to be a multiservice space."

The salon is one of only 70 in the nation to carry the entire line of Shu Uemura haircare products, and boasts a 23-person staff trained to provide the best customer service possible, according to Pitts. "We tell our employees that it's like Disneyland here: No drama allowed," he says. "Leave everything behind and get onstage for the show."

Despite the state of the economy, both owners are confident that José Luis Salon's commitment to clients will pay dividends. "We're not a discount salon, but every client still gets a scalp massage and a makeup touch-up," Buitron says. "It's those details that are going to make the difference." —G.B.
