Striking Balance

Infusing edgy youthfulness into classic styling principles, Vivienne Mackinder elevates the trend of chalking to high-fashion status.

Pastel Edge, the latest collection from Vivienne Mackinder, seen exclusively on these pages, brings something basic—chalk—to a higher level. “Often, clients aren’t comfortable taking risks with the color of their hair, but the impermanence of chalking installs the confidence to take chances and dare to be bold,” says Mackinder, founder of HairDesignerTV and a five-time winner of the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA), as well as the 2009 recipient of the NAHA Lifetime Achievement Award. Here, Mackinder teamed up with colorist Stella Avero to demonstrate how chalked colors can accentuate strong, geometric lines and enhance the playfulness of even the simplest cuts. —Kristen Heinzinger >
