TIGI Haircare presents The Catwalk Collection: The It List

Mark Fast
Autumn 2013

The Trend: Power Pony
Blocks of color—fuchsia, tangerine and bold red—in the hair, created to perfectly match the shades in the garments, made a major statement at the Mark Fast show. “The whole idea was to fashion something quite couture and super detailed,” says Nick Irwin.

Get The Look: After applying Catwalk by TIGI Curlesque Strong Mousse to the hair, it was center-parted and blow-dried flat to the head before being pulled into a low, clean ponytail and misted with Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Work It Hairspray. After tinting two wefts with TIGI Copyright©olour, placing them at the crown and brushing them back into the ponytail to create a strong block of color, the hair was tonged lightly at the ends to achieve slight movement. Catwalk by TIGI Your Highness Weightless Shine Spray supplied a glossy finish.

Backstage Tip: For an ultra-slick ponytail, spritz hairspray on the back of a brush to eliminate flyways. This will create a flawless finish.

JOHN RICHMOND
Autumn 2013
The Trend: Undone Waves
“Easy does it” was the mantra at John Richmond, where uncontrived, edgy waves offset by irregular texture and center parts surfaced on the catwalk. According to Irwin, Richmond’s woman is cool and a bit punk. She’s music-oriented and channels the 1980s as if they were the future.

Get The Look: After prepping the mid-lengths and ends with Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Styling Cream and applying Catwalk by TIGI Your Highness Root Boost Spray to the crown for lift and volume, the hair was blow-dried and a center part was created. Using Catwalk by TIGI Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hairspray, large sections of hair were misted above the ear before they were wrapped around a large curling tong, which was moved up and down the strands to create texture rather than a curl. The hair was held in place at the front and back with clips to allow the kinks to set, then the pins were released and the style was misted with Catwalk by TIGI Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hairspray for a glossy, slightly wet look.

Backstage Tip: To create an effortless wave throughout the back, take random sections and wind around a TIGI Pro Fat Curl Stick. Let cool and run fingers through the style.

The Blonds
Autumn 2013
The Trend: Bombshell Volume
Hitchcock-heroine hairstyles stole the spotlight at The Blonds show where Irwin and his team ran with the theme of the collection. “I created a series of blonde-bobbed wigs, making models look like 1950s glamour queens after a long night of partying,” Irwin says.

Get The Look: After prepping a wig with Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo to enhance texture and styling, it was set on hot rollers, following the direction of the wig while using Catwalk by TIGI Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hairspray. Next, low heat was applied with a diffuser to set the curls, which were then brushed out using more Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo and back-brushed into shape. Once the desired design was achieved, it was finished with Catwalk by TIGI Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hairspray to amp up volume.

Backstage Tip: For vintage Hollywood glamour, top with lots of dry shampoo for a “wiggy” effect.

Mara Hoffman
Autumn 2013

The Trend: Twist on Texture
At the Mara Hoffman show, the designer’s take on bohemian was played out with colorful prints, unique detailing and embellishments, and the hair was right in sync. “I transformed the models by creating a raw, unrefined look akin to that of a modern day gypsy,” Irwin says.

Get The Look: Locks were prepped with Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Styling Cream and a center part was created before hair was blow-dried and flat-ironed to remove frizz. After locks were tucked behind the ear, 1-inch sections of hair were randomly twisted in alternating directions with Catwalk by TIGI Curlesque Strong Mousse, then secured with clips before being set with a diffuser until the mousse was completely dry. The clips were removed, the twists were gently separated at the bottom, taking care to not create frizz, and the look was finished with Catwalk by TIGI Your Highness Weightless Shine Spray at the crown and Catwalk by TIGI Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hairspray on the twists.

Backstage Tip: Once the hair is twisted, the trick to maintaining the “ropey” effect is to just leave it. Any tampering will undo the all the effort you put into it.

Nicholas K
Fall 2013
The Trend: Contrasting Textures
Much like the fashions, hair was a study in contrasts on a number of runways, including Nicholas K, where Irwin and the TIGI Artistic Team showcased dual textures with glossy perimeters and matte, brushed-back waves. “I wanted the hair to look like the girls did it themselves—not a hairstylist,” says Irwin. “The dual texture and shiny, sleek sides helped add to the downtown vibe of Nicholas’ aesthetic, namely new-age travellers with a bohemian vibe.”

Get The Look: Starting at the hairline and continuing around the crown, the mane was divided into two sections. After brushing the bottom section into a ponytail with Catwalk by TIGI Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hairspray, the tail was braided and secured into a flat bun at the nape of the head before a small amount of Catwalk by TIGI Session Series True Wax was applied to the sides to boost shine. Next, Catwalk by TIGI Curlesque Strong Mousse was worked through the top section, which was diffused without making the hair crunchy. An additional bit of Catwalk by TIGI Curlesque Strong Mousse was applied to the hair before it was brushed back to hide the braided bun, while the sides and back were pinned to allow the narrow silhouette to set.

Backstage Tip: With dual textures on the top and bottom, maximize shine underneath with plenty of True Wax. This creates the perfect urban sheen.

Parkchoonmoo
Fall 2013
The Trend: Sleek Low Pony
Glossy ponytails were the look of choice on the Parkchoonmoo runway, where the minimalist style perfectly offset the strong silhouettes of the clothing. “Working off the collection’s theme of starkness, I created a severe yet elegant low ponytail, with hair that was super-smooth, shiny and glass-like,” Irwin says.

Get The Look: After prepping locks with Catwalk by TIGI Your Highness Weightless Shine Spray and flat-ironing hair sections, a 3-inch center-part was created. Next, Catwalk by TIGI Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hairspray was misted onto strands while they were brushed back into a ponytail and secured with an elastic. Catwalk by TIGI Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hairspray was then spritzed on the style to create an ultra-sleek finish and to tame flyaways.

Backstage Tip: For a super-straight, glossy ponytail, wrap it with paper and secure with a clip. This enables you to leave the style undisturbed until you’re ready for the big reveal.
