The Culture of Hairdressing event, hosted by R+Co, showcased the new line’s products, as well as styling techniques.

All eyes were on stage at The R+Co Collective Presents Howard McLaren: The Culture of Hairdressing event, held in September in Boston. McLaren—who founded R+Co alongside fellow renowned hairstylists Thom Priano and Garren—demonstrated how the new R+Co hairstyling line, which ranges from shampoos and conditioners to mousses, pomades and oils, can support a variety of looks and textures.

At the event, which was part of R+Co’s tour of several major cities, McLaren created a versatile haircut as well as three textured looks using R+Co products like Death Valley Dry Shampoo, Tinsel Smoothing Oil and Dallas Thickening Spray.

Before McLaren’s presentation onstage, American Salon caught up with him to ask about the inspiration for the products and packaging. McLaren said the team chose a basic lineup of 23 products to make things easy for stylists. “We don’t want to confuse the hairdresser with five waxes,” he said. “That simplicity is very important for us.”

Creative Director Amanda Wall spearheaded the packaging, which includes colorful images, as well as the team’s own photography. ✂ —Corie Russell
