Stella McCartney Enters the Skincare Space

Stella McCartney, fashion designer and champion of sustainability (her brand has long opted for synthetic materials over leather), is about to shake up the beauty world with Stella by Stella McCartney. The skincare line includes just three refillable products: Reset Cleanser, Alter-Care Serum and Restore Cream.

This isn't her foray into skincare—she launched her first line in 2006, and told Forbes she thinks it was too ahead of its time to take off. With this line, she aims to find new ways of creating products that are effective without harming animals or the planet—for instance, she told Forbes that the 2-in-1 cleanser is powerful enough to remove makeup and remove skin of impurities. The ingredients are 99 percent natural origin and work to promote long-term skin health, which the brand calls Skin Sustainability. Plus, the products are packaged in refillable recycled glass.

The brand follows its self-coined Alter-Care philosophy, creating a responsible alternative to luxury skincare and caring for ourselves and Mother Earth.

Key ingredients in the products include:

  • Organic Rock Samphire: A retinol-like ingredient that's rich in unsaturated and saturated fatty acids and phytosterols to smooth fine lines and wrinkles
  • Biotechnological Lingonberry Extract: A superfood skincare ingredient with polyphenols to help restore an even complexion and support elasticity and visible firmness.
  • Wild Organic Birch Sap: Helps to hydrate and restore visible firmness with minerals, sugars and vitamin C.
  • Wild Harvested Dulse Algae Extract: Rich in polysaccharides and helps to reduce the appearance of dark circles and restore an even skin tone.
  • Olive squalane: Naturally derived and helps to reinforce the skin’s protective barrier.
  • Natural-origin hyaluronic acid: Hydrator that locks in moisture for smoother, plumper-looking skin.
  • Cherry Blossom Extract: Contains polyphenols and glucosides, which help to restore even skin while supporting the skin barrier.
