Celebrity Hairstylist Jenny Cho On Her Collab with R+Co

Jennifer Lawrence, Amanda Seyfriend and ScarJo are just a few of the A-list celebrities that call on Jenny Cho for their hair needs. And, if there's one thing these leading ladies have in common, it's the effortless hair look that they've all seemingly mastered, many thanks to Cho.

Since becoming a celebrity hairstylist, Cho has dreamed of launching products that are both simple and effective, making it easy for clients to achieve that effortless look in and out of the salon. When Cho found out that R+Co was working towards a similar goal, the partnership seemed like a no-brainer.

In the midst of the pandemic, Cho and R+Co began working on her capsule collection, including Velvet Curtain Cotton Touch Texture Balm and Rainless Dry Cleansing Conditioner. American Salon sat down with Cho to talk about how this collection came to life, how she likes to use the products herself and how they can be incorporated into any salon service.

AS: Take us back to the beginning. Why did you choose these particular products?

JC: The two products very much align with my own philosophy and approach to styling hair. I am excited to be a part of such an easy-to-understand, effortless method. I think of these products as a set of tools that perform and deliver such amazing results.

AS: Can you walk us through your favorite way to use each of them?

JC: Think of Velvet Curtain Cotton Touch Texture Balm like a soft, lightweight balm that can be used on almost all different lengths, cuts and styles for a second-day hair look. It can be used on short hair to break up and to separate the ends, after a blowout to bring down the puffiness on some hair textures, or to add finish to a sleek bob. It’s also amazing on damp hair to add slight body and texture without the crunch.

Split the hair into four major sections to apply the balm so you get the product evenly distributed. Divide the back section from the top of the ears, so now you have two more sections. Twist each section and scrunch and pin. Apply your makeup, get dressed and be out the door into your car and let the summer heat and breeze dry the hair. Shake it out and apply a dab more to run through hair. Or diffuse dry and shake it out for a soft tasselled bend or wave in the hair.

Rainless Dry Cleansing Conditioner is refresher for your hair. It cleanses and conditions all at the same time. It has a lot of soothing, nourishing and cleansing ingredients that helps bring back bounce, redefine curls and refresh unwanted hair smell. I love using this on second and third day hair to revive the scalp and to redefine waves or curls. I like to mist it right at the root and use fingers to massage. Then hit it with a dryer and use fingers to redirect hair and to give lift at the root. To redefine curls, take each curl, give it a light mist, twist and scrunch to reform.

AS: How would you suggest incorporating these products into salon services?

JC: Velvet Curtain Cotton Touch Texture Balm can be incorporated to piece out strands, tame flyaways, add texture to shorter cuts and sleek down a style. The product is very light so it’s an amazing finisher to any services.

Rainless Dry Cleansing Conditioner would be a great product to show on yourself to easily demonstrate how to use it for your clients. It’s great because it can be used on day two, three or even four as a refresher mist that redefines curls and waves—it adds moisture and soaks up scalp smell.
