Typecasting: Tight Curls

Curl Profile  When you think of tight curls, think of a corkscrew. “They’re like those old-school telephone cords, looping around in a perfect coil,” says Lauren Moser, Ouidad Brand Ambassador. Clients with this curl type should be encouraged to embrace the natural spring in their curl structure. “You can really play with the shape. Twirl it around your finger and make it even bouncier, or pull the curls apart creating amazing volume,” says Moser. This curl type also blows out easily with a brush, creating a wavy texture.

Curl Pitfalls  The tight shape of this curl makes it hard for natural oils to travel down the hair shaft, making this curl type lack natural moisture and extremely prone to dryness and frizz. “Of all the curl types, you’ll see the biggest variety of curl tightness on this client’s head,” says Moser. “One area could have looser curls, while another area has super tight curls. To create curl uniformity, try cutting those straighter pieces a little shorter than the other tight curl pieces.”

Ouidad Curl Quencher Moisturizing Shampoo rehydrates dehydrated tight curls with vitamins E and A. “Really focus on the scalp—removing any excess oil—and let the lather rinse through the strands,” says Moser.

Ouidad Curl Quencher Moisturizing Conditioner repairs, softens and strengthens tight curls with hydrating aloe extract and keratin amino acids. “Start at the ends, work your way up mid-hair shaft. Really focus on the driest part of the curls, the ends. Comb it through with a wide-toothed comb, and try not to disturb the natural curl pattern,” says Moser.

Ouidad Curl Quencher Hydrafusion Intense Curl Cream feeds dehydrated curls with natural oils, and gives tight curls soft definition. “This is one of my favorite Ouidad products,” says Moser. “It does a great job of leaving the curls moisturized and shiny, especially on the ends. And, it’s also great for tight-curl clients that want a round-brush blow out—you’ll get a smooth, soft, glossy finish.”

Ouidad Curl Quencher Moisturizing Styling Gel is a conditioning gel that’s the perfect balance of moisture and hold. “It’s a soft gel that hydrates tight curls, but also defines them without any flaking,” says Moser. “I like to finger coil the gel in, section by section.” For super bouncy tight curls, layer the gel on top of the Hydrafusion Intense Curl Cream.

Ouidad Curl Recovery Melt-Down Extreme Repair Mask replenishes the hair’s moisture with ceramides and natural sugars. And, because the hair is structurally repaired, tight curls instantly look healthier. “I use this as a special treatment for my tight-curl clients with extra dehydrated hair,” says Moser. “After a 15-minute treatment, their curls look bouncier and healthier no matter how parched the hair was before the service.”
