How-To: Bridal Half Updo with Waves

Wedding season is in full swing, which means if you're a bridal stylist, or extension or updo specialist, your weekends are filling up. Here to help inspire, Marty Salinas, stylist at Van Michael Salon in Atlanta, shares his favorite bridal look and his secret to wedding-ready hair.

"I recommend Nutrafol to all my brides as part of their pre-wedding prep because we all know life isn’t perfect—but your hair can be on your special day," he says. "Not only does Nutrafol support stronger, healthier hair to create your perfect style, its ingredients help reduce stress levels so that you can rest easier leading up to your wedding day."

1. Prep Hair. I prefer my brides to come in with clean hair and then I can dirty it up myself with product. I like to use a lightweight mouse or volumizing tonic and blow into dry hair. This will help create a base for waving hair and also create smoothness and volume.

2. Part Hair. Part hair from ear to ear and clip front away from back.

3. Sub Section/Wave Hair. Starting in the back, take horizontal subsections in the nape of the neck the same size as the curling iron chosen to complete look. ( 1-1/4 inch used for the look seen here). Use curling iron or wand to wrap hair to create a waved look. Make sure to allow heat to completely penetrate hair. Continue this process up the back of the head.

4. Tease Hair. Tease the hair in the last two subsections at the top of back section. This will create a base to use to secure hair with bobby-pins.

5. Sub Section. Working from the natural part, start about 2 inches back from hairline depending on density of hair and create a subsection following the round of the head to create the top of your style. Take 1-inch subsections and backcomb at the base of the hair to create volume. Always remember that you can remove volume but it is harder to add volume later when styling. Always make it bigger then needed.

6. Style Top Section. Use your fingers to draw hair back until you have reached your desired height of the style and texture. You may use a workable hair spray as needed for texture in the hair. Holding all hair together, do a simple half twist and bobby-pin hair into top back combed section of hair interlocking bobby-pins.

7. Side Panels. Wave remainder of hair in side panels back and away from the face. Leaving some hair out to create softness around face, twist hair and gently pinch and pull until the desired result is achieved. In a criss crossing pattern and bobby-pin to secure hair. Continue to soften look loosening hair with a gentle pinch and pull technique.

8. Loosen Waves. Use your fingers to run through waves to loosen and create soft texture. Use a soft hairspray to style as needed and some lightweight shine spray at the bottom of the waves to polish off the ends.
